This month I will be involved as one of the principal facilitators with varying degree of responsibilities in military exercise in Indonesia. The Tentara Republik Indonesia / TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces) is conducting a joint exercise with the US Pacific Command, to be hosted by the Badan Koordinasi Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana / BAKORNAS PB (Indonesian Disaster Management Board) and the Center for Excellence for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance.
The exercise will consist of three consecutive exercises:
1. A National Disaster Management Workshop: to redefine and refine the posture of the Indonesian Armed Forces in disaster management in view of the new national policy framewok, i.e. the newly enacted Disaster Management Law and the National Action Plan for Disaster Risk Reduction. National level government officials from different ministries and agencie, the UN, INGOs, regional outfits and Indonesian as well as US forces will participate.
2. Tempest Express 12: a scenario-based regional workshop involving military planers from 12 countries with relevant Indonesian civilian local authorities responding to disaster situation. This will be supported by the Multinational Planning Augmentation Team (MPAT).
3. Disaster Management Exchange: a field-based joint table-top exercise based on a certain scenario at certain locality.
